University Lecturership in Russian in association with the Schrecker-Barbour Fellowship in Slavonic and East-European Studies at University College

The University proposes to appoint a University Lecturer in Russian in the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages from 1st September 2011 or as soon as possible thereafter. The Lecturership is associated with a Tutorial Fellowship at University College and will initially be held on a titular basis (as explained more fully in the Further Particulars).

The successful candidate should have a research record of international standing appropriate to the stage of the candidate’s career with evidence of or, exceptionally, evidence of potential for producing, distinguished research in the field of Russian literature and culture, 1917-present. The ability to research, teach, and supervise graduate students in the later part of the period (1945-present) may be an advantage, as well as a research interest in cinema and/or ability to research and teach the literature of a second Slavonic culture.

Candidates should be able to contribute to literature teaching at all levels of the undergraduate degree, and to participate in graduate courses and supervision. They must be able to provide excellent tutorial teaching in areas that satisfy the College’s teaching needs as specified in the further particulars, and carry out the full range of duties of a tutorial fellow.

Candidates should have a PhD or equivalent, an excellent knowledge of Russian, established skills in language teaching, and have native or near-native fluency in English, and the ability to teach translation from and into Russian and English.

The successful candidate will be appointed on the Oxford lecturer scale (combined university and college salary scale currently from £42,563 to £57,201 per annum), with substantial additional benefits including a pensionable housing allowance of £9,920 per annum payable to non-residential Tutorial Fellows enhanced by 75 % in the first year, bringing it up to £17,360, and a research allowance of £2,520 per annum (£5,040 in the first year).
