Statement Condemning Russian Destruction of Ukrainian Cultural Sites

The American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages (AATSEEL) reiterates its condemnation of Russia’s ongoing war on Ukraine, which has led to an enormous loss of life, disruption of the lives of millions of Ukrainians, and massive destruction of the country. Beyond the extraordinary loss of life and damage to innocent people’s well-being, however, we also condemn the ongoing harm being done by the Russian army to Ukrainian cultural sites and Ukrainian cultural identity. Since February, we have witnessed ongoing images of burning churches, burning libraries, schools and universities, theaters, and other Ukrainian cultural sites and institutions. Targeted attacks of artworks, monuments, and museums must be stopped immediately and the perpetrators held accountable for the destruction and loss of life.

The Executive Council of the American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages condemns the unprovoked Russian invasion of Ukraine as a direct violation of international law. As scholars of this region, we are appalled by the distortions of the situation circulated on Russian state media. We grieve for the victims of the ongoing attacks and for those killed over the past eight years. We stand with all those in Ukraine, Russia, and beyond who oppose this war.
